How to Make a Sun Shade for Autos

2014-05-13

An automobile sunshade, placed over the inside of the windshield to keep the vehicle cooler on a sunny day, also protects the interior from sun damage. Make an accordion sunshade in an hour or two, complete with your own painted design. Then put that sunshade to work shielding your vehicle from the intense midday sun--surprise someone with a unique handmade gift.

1
Tape together several pieces of newspaper and set the large piece over the vehicle windshield. If it's not large enough to cover the whole windshield, add some more newspapers. Then cut out a template the same size and shape as the windshield.

2
Set the large piece of cardboard on your work surface (a floor works fine) and put the template you've just created on top of it as far to the left as possible. Trace the template on the cardboard and then shift the template about 6 inches to the right. Keep the newspaper template lined up horizontally as you retrace the right end of the template. With the added width, you get adequate windshield coverage even with a bit of play remaining in the accordion folds.

3
Use the utility knife to cut out the sunshade. Then make a notch in the top by cutting out an area in the top centre that is as wide as your review mirror and about 3 inches deep. This will allow you to tuck the sun shade up under the mirror. Try to fit the sunshade into place, trim off more cardboard if needed.

4
Draw vertical lines at 5-inch intervals across the span of the sunshade. Fold your sunshade with the help of a bending board, folding forward and back alternatively to create accordion-like folds.

5
Paint your auto sunshade if you like, adding a personalised design. Allow it to dry completely before use.

6
Use a tape measure to get the dimensions of the rear view mirror. Take note of the width of the measurement.

7: Some sun shades have suction cups around the corners to secure them to your windshield. But if your sun shades do not have these parts, you can simply pull your sun visors down and press them towards your windshield. This will help hold them against the windshield glass.

8: Now that you've successfully installed your sun shade, you can leave your car anywhere without worrying about the sun's hot rays damaging the interior of your car.

Tips & Warnings

  •

Some fan-folded shades may have an additional folding direction to make them more compact. Once you have folded the sun shade along its length, you may have additional creases allowing you to fold it in its vertical direction. These creases should also be directional. Begin at one end and fold the gathered shade following the direction of the crease. Again, it will fold like a fan, making the long bundle more compact.
