How to Design Your Own Car Sun Shades

A sun shade is a piece of cardboard that blocks the sun's rays from coming in through your car's windshield. This keeps the car cooler, which means the seats won't be hot when you sit down. This also helps to preserve the interior and can keep the dashboard from cracking. If you don't want to buy a sun shade then you can make your own.

Instructions

Get a few pieces of newspaper and lay them down flat on a table or the floor. The newspaper should still be in good condition and not crumpled.

Use some scotch tape to connect the newspaper sheets together. Tape together the sheets of newspaper until they are as wide as your car's windshield.

Lay the taped sheet of your newspaper on the windshield and trace the shape of the windshield on to the newspaper. Use a pair of scissors to cut the extra paper so that it will be the same shape as the windshield. This will be your template in creating your sun shield.

Get a wide piece of cardboard. If you don't have any you can get a packing box from a grocery store and break it down. Use a pen to trace the template onto the cardboard.

Take a utility knife and use it to cut the traced template from the cardboard.

Use a tape measure to get the dimensions of the rear view mirror. Take note of the width of the measurement.

Cut a hole at the top centre of the traced template on cardboard. The hole should have the same width as the rear view mirror and a length of 3 inches.

Put the cardboard against the windshield and see if it fits well. Adjust the cardboard by cutting some of its edges if does not fit.

Measure 5-inch spaces across the top of the sun shade and draw vertical lines across the cardboard. Make bends at these points using your hands. Your sun shade is now ready to use. If you are the artistic type then you can draw or paint a design on it to make it more personalised and decorative.
